I AM

Remember this popular poster? This poster graced the wall of my dorm-room, as well as the walls of many of my friends, back when we were in college.  Our eyes tend to look at the list and fixate on the name that "speaks to us". We cling to that which is familiar. We fish for what we like. Based on this list (which is NOT exhaustive) I'm drawn to "Light of the World." You? Only, there is so much more to God than my "go to" comfort-name, as I learned years ago from the top of a tower at Bodiam [...]

Vision Quest

I bet you're wondering if my title is a reference to that '80's flick about a high school wrestler. Right? Trust me, that's not where I'm headed.  Do you have a desire to see more of God than what you've always seen? To take a more concentrated gaze within yourself in order to continue growing and changing? Perhaps you are feeling a nudge to do more than give a quick glance at those whom God has placed directly on your daily path. This week we'll all be getting an elective procedure call Spiritual Lasik. Sometimes our eyes get stuck on [...]

The Convenience Trap (5)

But?Proverbs 14:23. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads to poverty. Hard work = profit, BUT, mere talk = poverty. Such a pesky word: but. Solomon doesn't leave much wiggle room here. Perhaps because he knew it was human nature to try and wiggle out of all that stuff that seems too challenging and overwhelming.  What is that one thing you must begin putting effort towards in order to reap the profits that God would love you to experience in this life? Tip. It's usually obvious. Most likely it's the one thing you don't want to tackle [...]

The Convenience Trap (4)

In the Poor House?Proverbs 14:23. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads to poverty. Cutting corners? All talk no action? Hardly working but expecting great profit? You must be trying to locate Easy Street. A lot of us are. Who can deny that we all possess an inner desire for life to be easier? Somehow we've been duped into believing that we deserve it. Truth is, a "Cake Walk" is a game played at carnivals and fairs.  The expectation that we deserve to live an effortless life is risky. It drives us to shirk responsibility or make personal comfort a [...]

The Convenience Trap (3)

Working Hard? Or Hardly Working? Proverbs 14:23. All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads to poverty. I don't know about you, but when I fail to eat well, I don't expect to be very productive. I transform into a grumpy tyrant. My brain gets fuzzy. I become inefficient. My patience wears thin, and my outlook on life turns dismal. Without quality fuel, my body revolts. In response, I turn from those I love and wind up clocking-out early. In my fog, I forget I don't live alone and that my actions affect those around me. Lack of nourishing [...]
