We’ll Leave the Light On For You

I'm about to go a bit Debbie Downer on your manger scene . . . I'm apologizing right now. Only because we like the traditional dramatic story of Mary and Joseph showing up at the Inn and being denied entrance due to the facility being full. However, I have questions. Joseph was returning to his HOMETOWN. So where were his relatives and why wouldn't they immediately take in the couple - especially since Mary was "great with child?" And, while, yes, the Bible states there was no room in the Inn, there is actually NO mention of an Innkeeper. He [...]

Crowd Control

Creative license commencing now. I just finished directing a show called "Let It Be Christmas" which shares the nativity story through the music of the Beatles. Trust me on this. It actually works. My favorite scene? The census. Where Joseph enters his busy, crowded hometown for the census, along with Mary who at that point was great with child. The song for that number? "Help". Imagine the crowds: tired from the journey home, impatient to get registered and get out. Hot. Trying to wrangle and keep track of children in the crowds. Fatigued - for I imagine that due to [...]

Elizabeth: God Delivered on Time

"There's never a right time to have a child." I remember being newly married in my 20's and having this "advice" thrown at me now and again. George and I were 22, fresh out of college, working silly little jobs, and living in a one bedroom apartment. We didn't want a child. Not then. It was most certainly not the right time. He started seminary a year later - which would be 4 year journey. Following seminary, he searched for a job. For THREE YEARS. By this point were were approaching our 10th year of marriage. Rounding 30. Then, and [...]

The Character of Joseph

We seem to sympathize with the young Mary quite a bit. How would things have fared for the young girl that found herself miraculously pregnant had Joseph not been the man he was? She would have been ostracized. Maybe . . . even stoned? Certainly she would have been cast off as a choice bride offering for another man. Yeah, things would not have bode well for Mary. But, as I am staging Let It Be Christmas at our church, I've also worked in the anguish, embarrassment  and shame that Joseph must have felt knowing that Mary, his beautiful betrothed, his virgin [...]

There’s Something About Joseph

Mary, Mary, Mary . . . we do seem to talk a lot about Mary this time of year. If you are not a main player in the Nativity story, this could make you feel less than important. I'm directing the show Let It Be Christmas right now, and sure enough, Mary is quite the main character. But, as I work with the ensemble and we begin to discover some of the lesser known characters, it dawned on me . . . they need some stage-time. So, all this month at Daily Fast Fuel we'll be sharing out thoughts about [...]
